And the fun continues

Still grinding away on the drum!  These things are still thick as flys and crowd pleasers.  They fight great, taste great, look great, smell great……  These fish can be extremely easy to catch by simply using cut bait to bring them to you.   OR they can be very difficult by enticing them into biting a fly using a fly rod.   I had a morning crew and we bait fished them and caught em good, then we moved on to the flounder and caught a couple with only 1 keeper.  We did manage to catch a stargazer?!?! First time on my boat…..

The afternoon I had Rick Nyles of SKy BLue Outfitters out with me to catch them on a fly rod.   Rick is a professional fly fishing guide so he didn’t have any trouble catching them on fly.  It was awesome to watch.

Great morning trip

This morning I had Joe and Mary and their 2 boys Luke and William.   We jumped straight into drum fishing.  These boys have never been on a power boat before, and their previous biggest fish was 6″ they told me.  I knew that if we hooked a puppy drum they would be in for a treat.  Well, not even 10 minutes later Luke hooks into his first drum, and it’s a screamer.  Then another, and another, and another.  We caught em good for an hour.   We boxed our limit and through back a  couple more before we headed on to another species.

I knew conditions werent great for flounder fishing, but we gave  it a go.   We managed 2 keepers and 1 throwback.  We caught a couple lizard fish too.   Fun morning with this crew – these boys had a great time.  Looking forward to having them back next year.  THanks guys!

September / October

Summer is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean Salt Minded Charters has to end. This year I will be keeping the boat on the Elizabeth River from October until March. If you are interested in catching big Speckled Trout then give me a call and book your trip.

I will be fishing on the Outer Banks through the end of September.   This is a great time to visit the Outer Banks.  Less traffic, cooler weather, and the fishing gets even better!  Give me a shout to book your trip – let’s go fishin’

Tons of fish

Had three trips today

– This morning I had Kieth and crew for some bottom fishing action.  We had 3 young kids on the boat so my job was to keep the action hot and heavy.  We caught pinfish, pigfish, grey trout, puppy drum, sea mullet, sea bass, oyster toads, and I’m sure I am missing a couple more species.  We put the boat on the bank and looked for hermit crabs for a bit.  Ended the trip with some dolphin watching.  Great trip!

– Mid day was a straight up good ol fashion drum beat down.  We found a motherload in an area I have never even fished and whaled on em.  We had multiple double ups and sight casted a majority of our fish.   Fun as crap!

– Evening was another Kid trip and we put a hurtin’ on the sea mullet.  We also caught pig fish, pin fish, croakers, bluefish, and grey trout.  We decided to spend the last hour of the trip looking for a drum and we found one.  Awesome sunset on the ride in.   Thanks for checking out the site call to book your trip!

T-Shirts in August

I had Larry and his son Donovan last year in some pretty brutal conditions.  The blog post was named sweatshirts in August.  It was blowing NE @ 25 and probably in the low 60s.   This year we were greeted with sunny blue sky and light west wind.  Donovans younger brother Sean came along this time.   We got to the fishing grounds and started launching spoons.   It took a little while to break the ice, but we finally put a 25″ drum in the box.  We hung in the area and grinded out our 4 person limit.  Donovan hooked 2 by himself and Sean reeled in a nice one too.   We wrapped that up and went drifting for flounder.  Very slow flounder fishing with only 1 in the boat and a couple missed bites.   Another enjoyable trip with these guys, and looking forward to having them back again next year.  Thanks guys!
