Frozen Redfish

After a brutal cold snap – the puppy drum finally pushed out of the sound.  Fish are being caught in and around the inlet and beaches.  This is the same scenario we had last year – and we enjoyed excellent fishing during what would typically be a very slow time of year.  Well, they are back – and they are bigger! I headed down this afternoon and bagged a couple on the fly rod.   Sure is nice to have some fish to pull on close to home.

Bucketmouths

Hope you all had a great Christmas!!!  I know my family and I sure did.  The kids have a ridiculous amount of new toys.  I can’t see the floor of my house….

My Pops got me a TWs gift card for Christmas, so of course I was in there the next day.  I picked up a new trout reel.  The reel is a new for 2015 Diawa Procyon 2500.  My overall first impression was I was very impressed.  Smooth and solid – the drag feels great.  Only time will tell how well this reel holds up.  I threw a Strike King slow sinking twitch bait and managed a few nice bass.  Gotta love throwing on the waders, leaving your house, and catching bass in 5 minutes.

Freezing Evening

28 Air temp, 46 water temp. Patrick and I were ice skating on the boat. Got a few studs. Haven’t been fishing the Ditch nearly as much as the past few years, but each trip produces one over 27″ along with plenty of mid 20s fish.  This is the first winter that the power plant will not be pumping hot water.  Nobody really knows what to expect as the water temp continues to drop.   We haven’t had a problem getting them to bite yet!10858377_10205089385651556_4380165199499795041_n

Florida trip

Just returned home from a pretty long stay in the New Smyrna Beach area as well as a week in Disney World.  I drove down a few days before early to get in some fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon.  Really enjoyed exploring some new grounds and finding some solid fish.  I caught redfish the first couple days, and got on an excellent topwater trout bite on my last evening in the lagoon.  I also drove south to Merrit Island one of the days when it was super windy and hopped on a boat with Capt Willy Le of Native Fly Charters to try and land my first tarpon.  Great trip!
