Check out this fatty from my trip this morning – Just under 27″ and fat as can be. We had a 21″ trout and 2 flounder this morning too. Overall though – I would say it was pretty tough fishing we worked hard for what we caught.

I had Evan, Carey, and Jack with me this morning. We had an awesome trip – started out with a couple bites, but made a move that really changed the day. We got on a bite and tugged on some nice drum. Jack said it was the best workout hes ever had, Ha! At one point, we had a fish hooked up and he had about 5 or 6 of his buddies swimming along with him trying to eat the spoon out of his mouth. We put our limit in the box and kept catching. We saw a couple big sea turtles and some dolphin to top off the day. Sometimes I wonder how I used to spend every day trying to fix broken computers for a living!
Today I had some repeat clients from last year. These guys are a trip and know how to fish. Unfortunately I had a tough time putting them in the right place today. We started off pretty good with 3 drum in the box in about 30 mins. Tried another drift along the same area and nadda. Retied and relocated to a different spot for a different species – but managed 1 more drum out of a deep slough. Bounced around (and I mean bounced!) with the 20+ SW wind but couldn’t find a trout or flounder either. Still had a great time – Thanks for joining me again guys – I’ll see you this spring!!!!
Watch this video my brother just put together of some drum fishing on the Outer Banks! If this won’t get you pumped up to go fishing, I don’t know what will….. Enjoy!
This morning I had Mike and company…. They decided to pay their deposit and not show up. Thanks for the free $100…… I called my afternoon trip and told them to get on down to the ramp. They showed up about an hour and a half later. In the mean time I ran out and caugth a couple drum.
John, Matt, Ed and Ed Jr. hopped on and we headed out. The wind was still nice and calm so we got straight to drum fishing. The first stop was a total bust – we covered alot of flat with nothing to show. Drifted over to one of my favorite little points, and nothing there either. Time for a new spot…..
Showed up at the next spot and we finally caught one! John puts a 23″ in the box. Shortly after Matt hangs into one, but it pulls the hook right at the boat. We moved back up the flat a little further and finally found some fish. We ended up putting our limit in the box. I thought Matt was fishing with a hookless lure, but it turned out he had eaten like 3 bananas for breakfast. It wasn’t red hot – but we limited out and went on to the next species.
By then – the wind had picked up to 15-20 and it was white capping pretty good. Tried a drift for flounder – and pulled up 3 throwbacks. Had enough of the chop and tried a couple spots out of the wind. No keeper flounder for us – so we headed back to the dock. Great crew today – we had plenty of laughs! I hope I can shake this head cold soon – its been kickin ‘my butt.
Thanks for checking Salt Minded Charters!
